The Surin Islands Bookmark and Share

This group of 5 islands comprises Koh Surin North, Koh Surin South, Koh Khai (Koh Torilla), Koh Klang (Koh Pachumba) and Koh Ri (Koh Stock). Koh Surin North is the site of the National Park office with accommodation, restaurants, snorkeling equipment and long-tailed boat rentals. There are many large, beautiful and peaceful beaches suitable for camping especially Ao Chong Kard and Ao Mai Ngam. But diving is the main reason for coming here.

Ao Chong Kard is a large bay on Koh Surin North. Amenities include a tourist center, accommodation and restaurants. The channel between Koh Surin North and Koh Surin South is a long stretch of coral where shoals of colorful fish, tiger claw shells, soft corals and cartoon fish are plentiful. Ao Chak is situated on the east of Koh Surin North. A large variety of corals can be found here at about 200-400 meters from the beach.

On the beach side there are antler and cauliflower corals. Further out are dotted corals interspaced with coral foliose. This is considered to be one of the best and largest concentrations of corals around.

Ao Mai Ngam is situated to the west. To the north of the bay is a camping site and other amenities. The beach stretches the entire length of the bay. Porites lutea corals, table corals, and blue dotted corals as well as stingrays and many kinds of fish can be found in abundance at the mouth of the bay on the southern side.

Koh Surin South has many attractions but visitors can only take a boat from Koh Surin North. Most of the diving is in shallow water. Ao Suthep is the largest bay in the Koh Surin South group of islands. The coral reef stretches 1,200 meters and is one of the most complete and untouched coral sites.

Ao Phakkat is a small bay with a variety of corals such as coral foliose and staghorn coral. There are also sea anemones, tiger claws and many species of fish. Ao Tao (Turtle Bay) is on the southeastern side of the island. Hawksbill sea turtles and green turtles can be found here along with many varieties of coral and sea fans.

Ri-che-liew Rock is an underwater mountain about 10 kilometers east of Koh Surin. It is one of the best diving sites in Thailand. There are a great variety of sea animals and coral. Barracuda and batfish can be seen around the top of the rock. It is surrounded by colorful soft corals, sea fans and shoals of small fish. Large fish can be found at the depth of 80-150 feet such as sharks, stingrays, and ronans. Koh Khai (Egg Island) or Koh Torilla is south of Koh Surin South. It is also one of the best diving sites in the Surin Group of Islands.

There are coral reefs mixed with underwater rocks and many varieties of colorful fish. It is suitable for both shallow and deep dives. However, the current is strong and the flow of water may sometimes reverse so divers need to take special precautions.
