The Similan Islands
The Similan Islands is one of the best deep water diving sites in Thailand. It was voted one of the 10 most beautiful groups of islands in the world both above and under water by Skin Diving Magazine of the USA Deep Diving Sites Koh Bon is a small island north of the Similans.
The diving site is around a pile of rocks on the west side. There are white tip sharks, tiger sharks, whale sharks, and giant stingrays.
Christmas Point Rocks is situated north-west of Koh Bayu. It is another well-known diving site. Here one finds blue ribbon eels and mantis shrimps as well as grey sharks, white tip sharks, and giant stingrays. Skull Rock or Pu Zar Rock is where visitors may find different kind of shrimps and crabs as well as whale sharks and giant stingrays.
The Orchid Orchard is south of Island Number 6. There are a lot of beautiful soft corals, especially by the area near the buoys which is full of colorful corals and sea fans. The Garden of Eels is east of Island Number 5. It is a wide area of sandstone where hundreds of garden eels live. Shallow Diving Sites Ao Guerk or Ao Hin Rua Bai Similan Island is a good place for nature study. There are hard corals and large shoals of surgeonfish. Be warned that tourist boat traffic is high.
Ao Kwang En is another best coral site of the Similans. This is the only location where Acropora coral is found. Many turtle species can also be witnessed here. The Orchard is the only place in the Similan Islands where deep sea coral reefs can be seen by shallow diving when the tide is low. There are also corals and sea fans at a depth of 20-30 feet by the boat buoys. The National Park has many kinds of accommodation available at Koh Miang (Island Number 4). There are large tents with bedding and restaurants at Island Number 4 and 8.
